How does your game fit the theme?
Game is split into 2 sections: calm and safe exploration, and fierce defending and survival during the storm.

Did you write all the code and made all the assets from scratch?
I indeed wrote all the code from scratch (at a pace 8-16 hours a day).

None of the assets were created by me, aside a rain drop. All creators were credited regardless of licensing

I really like the storm wave concept. But somehow the waves are very difficult, arrows are also not very useful because of limited vision.  I only found out after a few times playing if the chest will appear continuously randomly, I almost didn't explore the side of the forest where the chest I had opened. But, it's a lot of fun! and has the potential to be a mature game.

The issues described will partially be addressed in a patch I will push when review period ends.  I do agree  should have communicated better that loot respawns.

The difficulty issue is more lack of experience balancing encounters.

I may revisit this game and turn it into a proper game once I get more experienced in Godot.

Cool game about being around a tree and fending off enemies!

Developer

Thank you for review :)

Nice job! The collection phase slowly builds tension with the incoming storm, making it risky to stray too far from the tree. Combat is simple but well polished!

Here because you played helped Flood N' Dash reach 20 rates.

I had a minor issue where I felt there wasn't enough time or incentive to go exploring. There were points and heals but nothing about going out for loot felt satisfying. Since the game was paced around rather severe enemy scaling, starting at your most powerful and only going down from there felt like the opposite of how I wanted it to go. The chests sometimes overflowing and wasting hp also wasn't very nice. However, hitting the enemies in big groups was satisfying and I liked the amount of strategy you put into a horde swarm game.

But the presentation was on point. The graphics looked stunning and it fit the theme very well. I liked the dynamic music to fit the storm and sfx when you hit enemies.

Overall a great entry, a couple quirks that could be ironed out but when you iron them out you get a diamond. That's a terrible analogy but you get the point.

Thank you for playing my game.

IMO Flood N' Dash should have more people play it.

Regarding the game, I severely overscaled.  Originally intended to have few permanent locations with pre-defined loot (so you could go there for a guaranteed heal in the next run, for instance).
Balance is an issue as well, mostly cos I made it too challenging (which is neither bad nor good tbh).

Thank you once more for a detailed review.  In next project I will strive to do better (or maybe I shall polish this one... not sure yet)

That’s really nice! I really see some potential in this game ^^ There could be more to explore, upgrades, stuff like that :p Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the comment :)

Originally intended to have some locations to explore and permanent loot in there, but I instead focused on bug fixing (some were pretty puzzling and mind-boggling)

My score was 2.645 in the end :P don't know how good that is. It's a good game and well made, although the weapon swish sound *did* become a bit annoying after a while. I loved the setting and the atmosphere it created. Great job! :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing my game.  The sound swish is definitely too much - next project will not have this issue for sure.

Really nice choice of visuals, mechanics were very clean and both modes were fun to play, great job on this one!

Thank you for a kind review!

Nicely done!! Love the art and the game design. Good little gameplay loop, can see how it could expand with more weapon types and attacks. I wanted to protect my tree with every fibre of my being! haha. The rain effects were really nice too, especially when the storm hit and it started to really come down. I noticed a small bug with that where, at least on my screen, the rain came down from the middle of the screen, rather than the very top.

Great work! :D

Developer

Thank you for feedback :D .  I kinda messed up screen and viewport hence why this bug has happened.

Played through your game on stream, if you wanted to watch me go through it ive got the vod below timestamped to your game

Developer

Thank you for playing and reviewing the game!  First time anything made by me was streamed :D

Funny enough, I did code the keeping of active weapon from the previous wave, but I may have broken it when I was scrambling to fix a critical bug.

In regards to the sound, I did hear it getting loud, but I had no idea how to handle multiple repeating sounds at a time.
And totally agree with texts, could fade them 10 seconds after the game.

The issue with rain and HP ball alignment is two-part:
- Still suck with Godot UI elements.
- Intentionally designed it as 1280x720 game (but did not know how to enforce the limit)

Very beautiful and atmospheric game. I liked the core gameplay. I get very nervous when the next stage of rain begins, perfect match to the theme! It would be very cool to add hero leveling and the ability to pick up new weapons from chests.

Developer

Thank you for review :D

Originally intended to have power-ups in the chest and more focus on exploration, but ran out of time.

The game design is spectacular, I really liked the mechanics of preparing before the storm to better defend myself from the hordes.

suuuuper nicely done. this was probably my favorite game so far; the music was good, the sound was good, the combat was intuitive, its a great game. nice work!

I was a little confused at first what to do but later the storm popped and everything went clear :D. Nice concept the artstyle is cute, sound fits to the game. Overall Nice work and Good Luck!

Fits the theme perfectly! Very interesting take on the game! Looks great, sounds great and feels nice to play. Only thing is the combat could use some work. But overall a great game and its solid for a weeks work. Also I really liked the rain kinda like dropping when the storm starts.

Developer

Thank you for feedback, glad you liked the game!

I tried to simulate Vampire survivor combat, but maybe I overtuned some bits.  Any particular ideas as to how combat could be improved in your opinion?

Submitted

I wanted to say it felt vampire survivor combat. It might just be me though but I do like a little more complex fighting. Like the AI dodging and not just attacking constantly making it a bit too easy to predict.

But honestly it served the purpose of the game really well.

Developer

That is a valid thing.  I planned to have a "boss" enemy, a lich who would cast spells and evade you, but critical bugs stopped me from implementing him.

Very cool Game, also very on theme. I really enjoyed the music on this one!

Developer

Thank you!

The music is done by Phat Phrog - site "fanatical" sometimes has bundles for gamedev, as well as music.

sick game! my score was 2756. I think this was an excellent application of the theme, the tension of exploring the forest while the storm builds in the background was very well executed and had me invested in the gameplay loop. The VFX for the storm fit perfect with everything too. The combat portion of the gameplay could use some more fine tuning but was adequate for the game.  Overall this was a game I enjoyed playing and I think you really nailed the theme and its application in terms of both form and function, great entry!

Developer

Thank you for your review!

I somewhat over-scoped the game, and had plans to include more interesting locations to explore with guaranteed loot in them (so that next attempts could be easier).
In terms of combat, which part felt off?

Submitted

Hard to put a finger on it exactly,  but I think the zoomed out camera and small sprites makes it tough to really tell whats going on and I found myself spam clicking quite a bit. Maybe keeping the zoomed out camera for exploration, and then having it center and zoom a bit on the red tree in the eye of the storm for combat would solve a lot of the off feeling for me.  The bow and arrow feels unsatisfying to use because I cant see my arrows, their flight paths, or them hit the enemy.  The enemies being so small made their type differences feel kind of meh because of the same thing. The more I think about it and type this response out the more I think it might just be the camera during combat lol. I bet a partial zoom centered around the eye of the storm during combat would help a lot imo.

That being said, I really enjoyed your game overall, I ranked it highly

Developer(+1)

That is a good feedback.  Had it originally closer, but felt it made wandering section feel off, so I zoomed out.  Did not realize I could play more with a camera... an oversight if I ever saw one lol.  Thank you for taking time to suggest how it could be improved.

Submitted(+1)

Great game! really played to the theme of calm before the storm

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you!

oh my... the art is amazing... I will say that the second wave had too much of those enemies. But other than that, this game is really good.

Thank you for playing my game and for review!
