Congratulations on the first Game Dev jam entry! :) Hopefully the first of many!
Ah, I remember Snake! Well done, you made Snake, and got it working! A great fit for the theme.
I actually tried reversing into myself right away, just to check if I needed to be careful not to accidentally do that later (it's happened before). It didn't cause an issue, so it seemed fine. :)
Nice entry, well done!
Great for the first game.Loved it!
thanks :) happy to hear you liked it :)
Very nice for a first time game jam project. Snake is such a classic game and I got to about 33 parts long before I smacked into a wall. Good Job
thank you :)
Good job for your first game jam. I also had the bug where you could move into yourself that somebody else mentioned but also couldn't repeat it - there's something odd when you press keys quickly one after another (I think when it happened to me I pressed up and left quickly. Ignoring backing into yourself, sometimes if you press two keys quickly it ignores one). For more general things if you want to continue working on it - sounds and music would add a lot and perhaps make it faster or ramp up the speed quicker.
thanks .. i know about that bug yes .. no it doesn’t ignore the keypress and thats the problem :/ .. keypresses set bools for the direction to true and prevent the keypress in the other direction.. so when you press up and left too quickly, isUp=true, isDown, isLeft, isRight=false and the second keypress sets isLeft=true, isUp, isDown, isRight=false next movement will the happen to the left .. need to ignore inputs until the head moved ..
probably i’ll make a new version .. i kinda don’t want to modify my very first gamejam game, especially cause i’m so proud about it and cause the very positive feedback :)
sound and polishing aswell as updating the field is planned for v2 ;) maybe i’ll put a nokia frame around the gamefield .. eventually in 3D, depending how my blender skills grow :)
Snake! Still a very solid little game. I like the very clear communication with the different shapes and colors for the snake, the food and the superfood - also very visible on the not so saturated background. You set a good scope and even managed to add highscores, great job for a first game jam submission! Congrats :)
thank you very much! motivates to go on and keep on learning :) especially as my old supervisor didn’t saw me in a developer role, because i’m not creative enough :D
It's Snake! I've never been very good at it.
I had a strange bug where I reversed into myself and lost. It happened twice and neither time on purpose, but when trying to cause it to happen by specifically pushing in the opposite direction I was going it wouldn't occur. 🤷♀️
thanks.. i wasn’t also not that good at it ;D
yeah, i know that bug .. it happens when you press the keys to quick .. to prevent the “going back” i added bools for all directions, pressing a key sets it and pressing another resets that and sets it new to another direction .. so when you go up, isUp is set to true and prevents going down .. when you now press left or right and right afterwards down (before the head moved) it goes down into itself .. need to find a way, to prevent input, before the direction changed ..
only time moving in the opposite direction is right on the start you can press left while the head is moving to the right ..
classic game that reminds me of my childhood. You can make it better by adding Music, SFX, n VFX, If you manage to find the good combination between the fx, it can make the game more enjoyable. I think you need to polish it a bit more so when the snake eat the food, it feels satisfying, and if you manage to do that, the game will be a different game I think. overall good job for completing the game!
happy you enjoyed it :) i’m thinking about v2 with different playfield, sounds and particle effects .. to be honest sfx and vfx was planned but striked as the movement took much more time then expected ..
Congratulations on your first game jam participation, as it can be quite challenging to make the decision to participate in one and submit a project. As for the game itself this is a classic and thus very fun, the only thing to improve as of right now could be sounds and music.
Other than that, excellente job, keep it up participating and learning about game dev :)
thank you :) as i joined on FR, i knew the theme already and the offered free course was motivation enough to do anything in about 2,5 days :D
as fixing the movement took me much more time then i expected, i screwed the sound and music cause i knew, i would get lost finding the perfect sound, especially as i have absolutely no idea how to produce it on my own :D
Nice job.
thanks :)
This is a very good remake of snake! Only thing missing is sound and polish, other then that, well done:)
thanks :) .. i know, i screwed the sound as the movement took much more time then i expected .. and i haven’t used any kind of sounds to this point of time ..
This is a great remake of a classic game. The game played exactly as I would expect which means you did spectacular at making it. Great Job!
thank you, for the motivational feedback .. i’m kinda hyped now .. wow, spectacular .. i’m speechless :)
I like the mechanic of the snake speeding up for certain foods, as it naturally increases the difficulty as the player survives, and makes progressing through the stages faster. A possible improvement may be to drop a normal food alongside the speed-up food so that the player has a choice between getting more points but enhancing the difficulty in return vs. going for fewer points but retaining more control. Controlling the snake becomes increasingly difficult at higher speeds, especially when performing tighter turns. Another thing that could be added would be a speed-down food, where the player suffers a point penalty in exchange for lowering speed to a more manageable.
It was a good idea to have a different sprite for the food types as it prepares the player for a potential speed increase; some sound effects would help distinguish them further.
A potential issue is that food can spawn on the same tile as the snake's body. I didn't survive long enough for it to be a frequent problem, but it was slightly confusing the few first times that it did occur. Incidentally, did you include a special outcome for when the snake reaches it's maximum length?
Overall, it is a simple and fun reproduction of the snake game, and is a great start for your journey as a game dev.
A novel interpretation of a classic brick-phone game.
P.s. My final score was 450.
first of all, many thanks for your extended feedback :) really appreciate that :)
i wanted to implement some sounds, but the movement took much more time then expected :/ .. and it had a much higher priority, then the sounds, as it was not playable at all :/ but without sound it can be played ;) regarding the food spawn, i’ll consider that, if/when i rework it, when rating is closed :) besides food spawning where the snake is, it also happend to me, that the food spawns “outside” the play field, which i recnogized after submitting the game .. besides the different sprites, i also wanted to add some kind of particle effect, so the attention of the player will be forced to the food .. but never used the particle system at this point of time, so i keep that for the updated version :)
thanks again for your feedback and congrats to your highscore .. i don’t know my exact number but i think it was something around 300 :)
Great job for a first time. You have everything ahead!
thanks! will try to keep pushing :)
I feel like I'm sitting in the corner of gym class on my Nokia, about to get in trouble for playing snake again. Well done!
+ding+dong+ samm79 to the principals office :D
thanks for the feedback :)
Nice game. I feel like playing the classic game.
Good work!
You can never go wrong with the classics. Nice implementation
great game :)
10/10
thanks <3
Well, it's what it promised xD
Classic snake game nokia 3310 and a loads of hours spent on that! :D But for a first gameJam good work. The movement felt a bit janky (well really old school snake like), but with nowadays resolutions the movement just started to hurt my head at one point. But good job on bringing the classics back!
thanks for your feedback .. what exactly had hurt your head? if i remember correct, the snake moved like that, one coordinate after the other .. which made my head hurt aswell while i tried to figure out the logic of that :D i got an idea, how my snake clone 2.0 will look like :) .. i’ll make the frame a little smaller and put a nokia graphic around that :) adopt the navigation to be more “classic”/oldschool :)
I mean that old school moving worked better on 3310, but with the resolution we have nowadays, it kind of moves too "laggy" so to speak. Like don't get me wrong you have PERFECTLY taken the movement from the old one, for me just with the computer screen it is not ideal, I would prefer flowy movement :D Although I get that it wasn't your choice of mechanic, so it was more of a feedback on my part :)
ok, i know what you mean :) it might would have been easier to code aswell, if i would just have used the modern movement mechanics.. i’ll consider all the feedback i get here for a possible update.. not sure, if i want to update my very first gamejam project .. maybe there will be a snake clone 2.0 with some of feedback i get implemented .. changing the field will be definetly part of that change ..
thanks for your feedback :)
