First off, I love the Weakening Cycle and the music, which was excellent and super unique for a video game. I also like the idea of building up your attacks, kind of like a deck builder, and playing little songs for each one was really fun.
Unfortunately, other than picking spells, there wasn’t really a lot to do but choose the one that would do the most damage and wait. Oftentimes I died before I could heal because I simply couldn’t do enough damage in time, and there was nothing I could do. I think it could really use some other mechanics - maybe items you could use, or a way to block attacks - to keep the player engaged. Another note is that there was a huge amount of UI on the screen, and it felt really cluttered. I would suggest trying to clean it up and only show what is necessary!
Overall, a really unique entry. Nice work!
Cool idea! Maybe it's just me, but I kept forgetting my spells. xD Maybe the songbook could stay open on the side the entire time? Or maybe the animation when opening the book could be a little bit faster, so you can peek at the songs faster. Also, it feels a bit unnatural closing the book with a different button than I opened it with. I feel like if S would open AND close the book, it would feel more natural and wouldn't throw me off. The background music started being a bit repetitive at the end, but maybe that's just me. Speaking of repetitive: Maybe the spells could have their own abilities? I just always used the most damaging spell available, so the game felt a bit repetitive because the spells were kinda the same. But then, this IS a game jam game after all, and maybe I just didn't come across the cool spells during my playthrough.
All in all, a well executed idea!
A very cool idea with nice sound design! Was fun to play as well
Interesting idea. A bit tricky at the start when you have to guess a music/note sequence to do anything, and not clear when you succeeded on an input. Maybe a tutorial or simpler levels at the start, or more feedback for the actions would improve the gameplay. Wasn't sure I needed earphones, but music seemed a bit too quiet.
Good luck.
