Thank you for playing and for giving us feedback! The only solution to the lag spikes from particles that I know (which I have previously used, just not in this game due to time constraints) is to render them all at the start of the game or at some loading point. It's a bit of a clunky solution and I do hope they add a fix to that in later versions. I'm glad you enjoyed the game!
I wandered around and explored the map quite a bit, and honestly I lost track of how many files I collected quickly π
I found it relaxing to be able to just explore the world with a simple OST playing in the background, but I didn't quite fully understand if I was supposed to collect every file maybe- or just explore? I thought the idea/setting of the game was quite original. Either way, I enjoyed the aesthetic, and the art style and music fir together well. Nice job!
Thank you for the feedback! In hindsight, I never really looked over the shadow and it was kind of just a little thing I set up before I even started programming the game just for fun, so it's not very caught up with the rest of the polish. Aside from that, I hope it didn't hinder your experience too much, and I'm glad you had fun with the laser: Trying not to kill innocent civilians lol
Thank you! I'm happy you find the game to be polished! I had no clue how it was going to turn out compared to other games—and honestly—I still don't know how it compares π
I've been away from home since a day before the jam ended, so we were kinda rushed towards the end- and now I won't be able to rate peoples' games until the last day π (I'll be sure to check out everyone who commented at least)
I never really noticed an issue with the ground enemies until you pointed it out, so thank you for that lol- I agree that it is hard to tell when they are about to shoot if you are right up to them
Anyways, thank you a lot for the feedback- and once again, I'm really glad you enjoyed how it turned out!
I'm still trying to recover my sleep schedule π°
The cause of the lagspike is from the renderer loading all of the particles as the game starts (because for some reason OpenGL doesn't have a proper way to preload them π€)
The resolution I agree might appear bigger on screens that are smaller than 1920x1280
I'll for sure have a look into that for the next game jam, because I've been hearing issues with the resolution from past game jams too
I'd assume if a device is smaller than that resolution, the game would be too large (my monitor is 2560x1440, so for me it seems to fit, and I just chose 1920x1280 because majority of monitors support that)
But thank you for the feedback, perhaps I could implement a way to change resolution for the next game jam π€
Thank you for pointing that out- I never thought of the shadow in that way; My vision was that since the sun is behind the player, it is casting a shadow more towards the camera (because the world of the game is 3d, you're just playing it from a 2d angle)—and since the sun is so far away, the shrinking and growing would be negligible—but I never realized that the shadow's position and size could confuse players about Mr. Magnificent's position.
Thank you for the feedback! I never would have caught that on my own lol
Thank you for the feedback! I agree, in hindsight the kick does probably do too little damage π
Hopefully in our next release of the game, we'll have much better balancing
And thank you for the comment about the UI, I too really enjoyed how good of a job Mightybjorn did. It really helps polish the game!
Hey, thank you for the review! I'm glad you found the sounds and art satisfying; we spent a good amount of time really polishing that up lol. As for the scaling- I'm not entirely sure how to fix that right now, and my suggestion would be if it's too game-breaking, download one of the files attached.
Again, thank you for the feedback, I'm really happy you enjoyed playing!
Forgot to mention in the controls of this game that Shift is Sprint
Anyway, have fun: https://itch.io/jam/scream-jam-2023/rate/2321131
I'll be able to rate yours some time tomorrow
Here is my game link: https://itch.io/jam/scream-jam-2023/rate/2321131
The concept is really cool, and so is the neat little hybrid between 2d and 3d. The abilities are unique and fun to use, but it would be nice if I didn't have to sit through the cutscene when I die (maybe there's a way to skip that I just missed). The sound effects and music were also very good, well done!
Downloading your game right now! Here is mine: https://itch.io/jam/scream-jam-2023/rate/2321131
Wow, this game is actually impressive! The art style flows really well, the ambient track and sound effects were really clean, the story was well told, and most of all, the gameplay wasn't ambiguous. I actually knew what I was doing for this game, and the controls were really simple. You did a great job!
I enjoyed the art style a lot and the story was very disturbing (in a good way). The horror atmosphere in this game was pretty nice, although like you mentioned in the credits some better sound design would really sell it! Sound design aside though, it was still really well done and the art was great. It would be nice to be able to make the game fullscreen, as the resolution was rather small on my monitor (2560x1440), but to be fair I do just have a larger monitor so that'd be more of a me issue than a game issue. Nice job!
