My submission to the https://itch.io/jam/trijam-268 with the theme: Acid rain.

Save the ground from the acid rain, use left/right or A/D keys to move your bucket and catch the acid raindrops.

Note: This game is music-based, turn on your speakers and check the volume before playing.

The original development recording of the 2 hours and 58 minutes development is available here:

Ideas and future work:

I found the 3-hour limit a very interesting challenge but of course there were many ideas that I did not have time to implement.

  • A leaderboard so people can compare their scores. ✔️
  • Damageable environment affected by the acid dropplets that contributes to the score.
  • A guarantee of an ideal strategy to collect all the dropplets (the system is not random but analizing the input files was too time consuming).
  • Dual bucket wielding, maybe using the mouse or other keys, so you can realistically get all the dropplets when spread out. ✔️
  • A fill gauge so that the bucket needs to be emptied safely (and maybe having bucket spills).
  • A character holding the bucket that needs to be protected from the acid dropplets as the bucket itself sways.
  • Some sounds on top of the music.
  • Better music. ✔️
  • Better visuals. ✔️

Funny enough, I just took a quick look at some of the other submissions and there are some interesting overlaps with both the ideas I executed and the ideas I wish I'd have time to execute.

Update:

I worked on "Acid rain in the bucket" for 3 hours during the trijam. There were many things that I would had expanded on if I had more time. I did not know that brainstorming and asset hunting were not part of the time allotment. I spent a couple more hours to tackle some of the stuff I wish I had finished. I will update the game submission only after the voting period ends but I wanted to post this update before I forgot. Changes:

  • Better selection of music.
  • Better soundfont.
  • Tweaked some graphics (and removed the grass out of place).
  • Leaderboards so you can compare against other players.
  • And two buckets! One controlled with the mouse and the other with the keyboard. The two bucket mechanic adds to the feasibility of collecting more dropplets but since the buckets interact with one another, it requires some planning and hand-eye coordination.

I hope you enjoy it!
