Gone in 60 Seconds

I had a hard time sticking with this perfunctorily scripted, amateurishly acted, incompetently edited car caper movie—until the last act, a forty minute car chase that rolls through the 70s southland like a wildfire. The vehicular acrobatics—stunt driving at its pre-digital, barely choreographed height—are a combustive, frenetic action feast. Why they're repeatedly interrupted with meek sight gags and incidental bystander vignettes is confusing and frustrating, but that’s balanced out by the gorgeous telescopic graininess of the camerawork. Overall it’s shambolic, but it’s easy to understand this movie’s imperfect, lasting appeal.
