The Batman

The Batman

I wish the plot were a bit tighter, but on repeat viewings I just like this more and more. It’s got the vibe of a downer rock album, the kind you can listen to over and over in your bedroom with the blinds drawn and your headphones on. It’s the comic book cinema version of “Nevermind,” I guess—I’m anti-Nirvana but I acknowledge that there’s always going to be a space for that kind of guttural, logic-lite, emotional wailing. This is that, and as an idea, an artistic concept applied to the absurdity of super-heroics, it’s incredibly invigorating.

Watched it with my 13-year old daughter, who recognized why this is a very different beast from an MCU joint: “It’s artistic.”
