Yield to the Night

Yield to the Night

I've been watching these “British noirs” collected on the Criterion Channel and it’s quite noticeable how cerebral they are in comparison to their American counterparts. “Yield to the Night” might be an extreme example; almost anything that Hollywood audiences would consider “action” happens in the opening scene. The rest is either fairly melodramatic flashbacks or, more strikingly, witheringly intense inner monologues from Diana Dors’ protagonist. Dors is riveting in the role. Despite the salacious marketing, she is mostly deglamorized and convincing as a haunted, romantic hopeful for whom it somehow all went wrong. The ending, where it fades to black, is harrowing.
