Peyote, Lophophora williamsii. also known as Mescal buttons is a spineless cactus. It is found in the Southwestern United States south into central Mexico. It is also found in the Chihuahuan Desert within this area.
Peyote grows in those areas especially where limestone is in the soil. It has small pink flowers that bloom from March to May and has bloomed as late as September.
Indigenious North American peoples have used it for religious purposes for thousands of years. It is also used as a recreational drug for its psychoactive properties.
