ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Project

Climate change communication  and education (CCE) is recognized as a priority in the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Effective CCE is fundamental to overcoming climate denial, increasing climate literacy, and supporting climate action. There is an urgent need for increased quality and quantity of CCE globally, delivered across education, government, civil society, business, media, and communications sectors.

The Monitoring and Evaluating Climate Communication and Education (MECCE) Project responds to this urgency with an ambitious international research agenda that aims to increase the quality and quantity of CCE to advance global climate literacy and action.

Partnership Approach

The MECCE Project is an international partnership project focused on increasing context-informed understandings of quality climate communication and education (CCE) in policy and practice, as well as providing global data to support country benchmarking, target setting, and progress in quantity of CCE provision. We are a partnership of over 100 scholars and organizations, including an Advisory Committee comprised of the IPCC, UNESCO, UNFCCC, and UNESCO Global Education Monitoring Report.

Theory of Change

The MECCE Project conceptualizes CCE as going beyond increasing scientific literacy to also engage psychosocial and action dimensions necessary for catalyzing change across each of three spheres of transformation:

Political Systems and Structures

Mobilizing our findings into intergovernmental negotiations as well as CCE monitoring and evaluation processes.

Practical Technical Responses

Including informing education policy and system dynamics, communication practices, and civil society organizing.

PERSONAL VALUES AND BELIEFS

Considering target audiences within their social context as individuals who are influenced by a variety of factors such as education and culture.

RESEARCH FOCUS

The MECCE Project is supporting this transformation through three intersecting Axes of research activities:

AXIS 1: INCREASING CCE QUALITY THROUGH CASE STUDIES

Our research supports improved understanding and practice of effective CCE via knowledge syntheses studies, 80 Country Profiles, and at least 25 Case Studies.

AXIS 2: INCREASING CCE QUANTITY THROUGH INDICATOR DEVELOPMENT

We are developing new indicators and datasets to enable national and intergovernmental benchmarking and target setting, to spur increased CCE provision and action.

AXIS 3: KNOWLEDGE MOBILIZATION FOR CCE ACTION

We engage stakeholders to support setting and achieving CCE targets at local to intergovernmental levels via opportunities and outputs, such as Learning Institutes and Webinars, Digital Library (including research briefs and reports), Blog, and Global Monitoring Tools.

Key Audiences

We offer cutting edge content on what constitutes quality CCE in policy and practice, and provide recommendations on how stakeholders can increase ambition on CCE benchmarking and target setting. Our primary audiences include:

POLICY-MAKERS, DECISION-MAKERS, AND COUNTRY NEGOTIATORS

At intergovernmental, national, and sub-national levels who can effect political change, including UNFCCC Action for Climate Empowerment Focal Points.

KNOWLEDGE BROKERS AND EDUCATION STAKEHOLDERS
