What does this box around notes mean?

• Oct 11, 2024 - 21:05

In this piece I'm transcribing, there's a box around these notes with an arrow pointing to the right. What does the box/arrow mean?
Also, what does it mean that the noteheads are solid but have no stem?
Many thanks

This is "Aleatoric Box Notation", first used by Lutoslawski.
See e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58wO88jwdfk
There have been many discussions on this forum, e.g.

A typical workaround to notate this in MS, is to use a svg image, e.g. https://musescore.org/en/node/362101

There exists also a font Aleboxes to make boxes: see https://github.com/dankreider/aleboxes and https://forums.steinberg.net/t/aleatoric-boxes-font/712764 )
(There is a problem with pdf's on my system using this font; might be a Linux thing.)
