World Digital Library, Arab Peninsula Regional Group meeting
Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing) spoke, at the invitation of the National Library of Qatar and the World Digital Library (WDL, a project of the US Library of Congress and partners), about "Authority control in Wikipedia and its sister projects", at the annual Arab Peninsula Regional Group meeting of the WDL in Doha, Qatar (May 13 & 14). The event was attended by representatives of national and university libraries in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iraq, Sudan and others, as well as speakers from the USA. Andy's slides are online.

Image donation – Museum of fine arts
We are glad to announce that The Museum of fine arts donated to WMAR more than one thousand pieces of art to upload to commons:. This pieces of art included asian art, precolonial american art and art from the XIX century. We estimated that the final upoload will be in two months. The images can be found in commons:Campaign:MNBA
BA Camp
WMAR participated from BA Camp, a camp of innovation and technology organized by the goverment of Buenos Aires. During the camp WMAR gave a conference about open culture and the Wikimedia projects.

GLAM, all over the place!
4th batch upload from the National Archives …and a difficult workshop
For the 4th time, Wikimedia France and the National Archives worked together in the selection and uploading on Wikimedia Commons of forty historical and (very) diverse reproductions: marriage contract of Charles I and Henrietta Maria of France , the holograph will of Napoleon III, a handwritten letter of Marcel Pagnol, or a law on freedom of the press; thanks to the great help of Jean-Frédéric.
In parallel, a workshop took place at the Archives facilitated by Kikuyu3, Céréales Killer, Chaoborus, Incognito668 and Jules78120, but didn’t provide satisfactory results, due to connectivity issues and...a lack of participants. Well, that happens too! We plan to meet our partner-contact soon for a debriefing session.
Thinking on a grand scale at Sèvres
Months go by, yet each one is different in Sèvres, at the City of Ceramics. Wikimédia France’s volunteers Lionel & Coyau continue to photograph the expertise of the bicentenary factory workers. May viewed the casting of the largest Charpin vase, a 1.40 m high monumental vase , and also some plates decorated by the students of the factory.
A "Wikipedia galaxy" in Lorraine
As part of the cultural and scientific event "Science & You" organized in Lorraine, a conference entitled "The Wikipedia Galaxy" was unusually held in ...the Planetarium of Epinal! Jacqueline, information & communication sciences researcher and member of Wikimédia France gave the keys to understanding the encyclopedia and contribute to it. This was followed by 3 outreach workshops which took place in media centers and libraries of the region. For the record, in the small village of Attignéville, which has 225 inhabitants, they were 12 gathered to edit Wikipedia!
Building up new GLAM relationships in Isère
On May 12th, 4 representatives of Wikimédia France (Guillaume & Letizia members of the Grenoble local group, Florian board member and Anne-Laure, staff member) introduced Wikimedia and GLAM activities to the Culture and Heritage department of the regional council of Isère. For 2 hours, more than 30 representatives of Grenoble-Isère cultural institutions were able to ask all their questions and the first ideas emerged: highlighting the rich legacy of Vizille museum on the French Revolution, improvement of articles on specific items (equestrian statue of Napoleon, French Revolution, etc.), etc. A great next step after the beautiful edit-a-thon at the Casamaures last April!
There were not only Techies during the Hackathon!
When Wikimedia France started to organize the European Wikimedia Hackathon in Lyon, we never imagined that we would return to the scene so quickly. Indeed, Valpré, the congress and seminar center where the Hackathon was hosted, houses an impressive library of 80,000 books and numerous periodicals. Members of the Lyon local group must be prepared, the bookscanner will run at full speed for a large Wikisource workshop to come!
Make a (GLAM) change!
Discussion panel "ABC of Free Knowledge" on copyright negotiations in Brussels
On Mai 8, Julia Reda, member of the european pirates, Elisabeth Kotthaus, representative of the European Commission in Germany, Joe McNamee, director of European Digital Rights and Dimitar Dimitrov, Free Knowledge Advocacy Group EU discussed the latest copyright negotiations in Brussels at WMDEs cultural discussion panel "Das ABC des Freien Wissens". The outcomes of the negotiations will have an impact on the engagement of GLAM volunteers (freedom of panorama, e.d.) as well as on GLAM work in general. One of the conclusions was that the representation of interests concerning free knowledge towards the European Commission needs more support by engaged people like the Free Knowledge Advocacy Group EU. The next event on June 25 asks, how participative Open Culture really is. Tim Renner, Berlins Minister of State for Culture will be one of the participants.

GLAM on Tour at the conference "MAI-Tagung - museums and the internet"
Germanys main conference on museums responsibilities and self-conceptions in the digital world, "Mai-Tagung", invited WMDE this year to present the project GLAM on Tour. Together with User:Atamari, the GLAM volunteer from Wuppertal who coordinated our last GLAM on Tour station with the Von der Heydt-museum in January, we spoke about the possibilites for GLAM institutions to work with Wikipedia communities.

Change your mind - an activating workshop on free licenses
Have You ever talked to GLAMs about licensing their content? Sure You did, if you are a GLAM activist. And did you ever see the lost desperation in their eyes confused by that many options and barriers? We saw a lot of it and decided to look for a new approach. Together with the German Digital Library we developed the activating workshop "change your mind". It focuses on three options. Either the object is public domain, or you choose an open Creative Commons license (CC BY or CC BY-SA), and if none of these are possible, then put this object aside and focus on the next one. The participants get an introduction to licenses (see presentation), and then, they are invited to take part in a role play. Everyone gets a mumble. White is the promoter of free licenses, black its opponent, and the colored mumble indicates the moderator. In small groups, they then discuss the provided samples and present their results in the third part to the broader audience. This helps to empower the participants to actually apply their knowledge and get more familiar with licenses. In the future, they will find it easier to opt for free licensing when they have the chance. The workshop was run the first time at the Jewish Museum in Berlin in May. In the beginning of June, we held the workshop to 36 GLAM attendees of the conference "We are museums"; for further information in German, please read the blogpost.
Measuring GLAM
We all face the challenge that our work is evaluated and measured. And we like it ourselves if we are able to say what we do is use- and meaningful. How do we define success? Is it that an event took place, is it the number of participants, the number of bytes uploaded to a Wikimedia projects? How about trying to convince GLAM institutions to become part of the Wikiverse as active community members? Many steps to go. How do we measure the results? Which are the tools and meters? In the last month, we have been thinking a lot on what we do in the GLAM field and how we measure the results. Please comment on our thoughts.

Wikimedia Italia still works with BEIC Library and bibliographic data
3400 usages of BEIC images
Thanks to the new uploads mentioned last month, images uploaded by BEIC are now used over 3400 times in the main namespace of over 200 wikis and BEIC accounts largely surpassed the 10 thousands edits on all projects combined.

Mix'n'Match tool and Italian data
The SBN (National Library Service) authority file has been added to Mix'n'Match tool created by Magnus Manske to understand whether a record on an extern catalogue corresponds a Wikidata element. This is a fundamental step forward in the collaboration with Italian libraries at its highest level of integrating bibliographic data with international projects. The ongoing work has found until now 10.114 data corresponding out of a total of more than 100.000. An Italian version of tool instructions is in progress, an English version will follow as soon as the Italian version is ready.
MUSE Award for Fashion Editathons
The Europeana Fashion Editathons has been awarded by MUSE, American Alliance of Museums Media and Technology Professional Network. Wikimedia Italia participated in 2013 with Rossimoda Shoes Museum in Stra (Venice) and students from University of Padua and Venice. In that occasion, some historical shoe's pictures were uploaded to Commons.
Wikiexpedition on bicycles and visiting one of the most remote areas in Macedonia
Third Wikiexpedition in Macedonia
On our first Wikiexpedition in Macedonia in town Negotino, central part of Macedonia, we make plans to visit one of the most remote area in Macedonia, Mariovo. The idea was to go by bicycles. After little consideration, we found that on the last days on May, i.e. 29th, 30th and 31st of May, in Mariovo will be scheduled an outdoor-festival "Mariovo Off-Road Experience: Enter The Wilderness", we make cooperation with the organization of the festival and we bought tickets for festival.
This expedition was something new for us, because on our first two Wikiexpeditions we travel with train and with car, but, this time we make a trip to the area and we explore the area riding bicycles. Our bicycles were transport by organizator of this festival one day prior the start of the festival. Two volunteer members of Shared Knowledge and one non-member volunteer (Ehrlich91, Македонец and Petrovskyz) took a part on this Wikiexpedition.
Mariovo Off-Road
Our team members traveled with train from Skopje to Prilep, nearest town to Mariovo, and after that by car to the camp, where we stayed three days and sleep in our tent. Traveling with train to Prilep gave us an opportunity to take pictures from every train station along the route. This was similar with our first Wikiexpedition, when we take pictures of every train station from Skopje to Negotino.
During our journey to the official camp for the festival, we visited and take a photos of two villages. We had a small mechanical and technical problems first day in the camp, so we didn`t have a chance to ride our bicycles. That's why, we decided to visit the nearest village around the camp and the beautiful monastery from Middle Age. Later, we solved our mechanical problems and made a ride around the village Manastir. In the evening, two members of our team spent three hours on the rocks around the village Manastir and successfully made a lot of pictures with the bright sky and a lot of stars.
Next day, we make a three hours trip by foot to the village Zovikj, which is famous because of the stone bridge. The bridge is very beautiful and it`s in the untouched nature of Macedonia, also famous for the scenes in the Macedonian film Dust directed by the Macedonian director Milcho Manchevski.
Sunday was the main day of the festival. We visited five villages and two monasteries with our bicycles. The tour had length of 38 km and was rode of the dusty and dried roads and on some parts with asphalt. The lunch, which was typical traditional Macedonian food, was served in the monastery of the village Vitolishte.
Birds and Expeditions
Image donation – Birds of the Netherlands (1770-1829)
With many thanks to User:Husky some 250 historic images of birds of the Netherlands were donated to Commons. The images come from the book Nederlandsche Vogelen (“Birds of the Netherlands”, 1770-1829) by Nozeman, Sepp and Houttuyn from the collection of the national library of The Netherlands.

For every bird the following names have been added
- Modern scientific name of bird depicted
- Modern English name of bird depicted
- Modern Dutch name of bird depicted
- Dutch name as mentioned in book
- Latin name as mentioned in book

Because of the Latin names all birds are in their corresponding categories, see or instance Alauda arvensis. We hope that the English and Latin names will help uptake on non-Dutch wiki projects.
A web application to summarize Expedition Wikipedia
The Wikipedian in Residence project Expedition Wikipedia took place in 2014. Under the guidance of the Dutch Foundation for Academic Heritage, ten Dutch university museums and collections and the Tropenmuseum have contributed media to Wikimedia Commons, with a relation to the general theme of expeditions, and journeys of discovery. Wikipedian in Residence (WiR) was Sandra Fauconnier (User:Spinster).
On 28 May 2015, the project's results were officially presented during a well-visited symposium in Utrecht, around the subject of Shared Authority. Also, on that day a web application was launched which brings together some of the results of the project: http://www.expeditiewikipedia.nl (content mainly in Dutch). Source code of this application is open source (MIT license) and available on GitHub.
An image donation to Wikimedia Commons by the Tropenmuseum, in the context of this project, is scheduled for the upcoming months.
The Józef Burszta Digital Archives donation

Almost 8000 photographs from the Józef Burszta Digital Archives run by the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
In 2014 the Institute of Ethnology at Adam Mickiewicz University created an online database of its considerable archive of visual material, named after one of the researchers, prof. Józef Burszta - the Józef Burszta Digital Archives. The Institute's aim in creating the Józef Burszta Digital Archives was to encourage the reuse of ethnographic documentation created and gathered by scientists and researchers. The University staff have gone through a lengthy process of acquiring BY-SA license permissions from authors of all photographs. Images in the archive have been taken during ethnographic field work in Poland and abroad and document regional customs and dress, folklore festivals and events, everyday objects, artifacts, symbolic objects, crafts and architecture of rural areas.
The Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology at Adam Mickiewicz University have begun collaboration with Wikimedia Polska in January 2015. In March, the Adam Mickiewicz University signed OTRS permissions allowing the upload of photographs by all creators in the JBDA database to Wikimedia Commons. Upload began in May, using a dedicated script created by Yarl. Volunteers are currently working on categorising the files.
The JBD collection is a varied and interesting set of images and we hope it is going to be reused across many Wikimedia projects.
Edit-a-thons about Contemporary artists and St. James's Way
Edit-a-thon about Contemporary artists
Last 23 May 2015 an edit-a-thon about contemporary artists was held at the Museo Patio Herreriano de Arte Contemporáneo Español of Valladolid. This event was organized by Culturatorium, with the collaboration of Museo Patio Herreriano and Wikimedia España. The purpose of this activity was to approach the contemporary art to society, and to make more visible those artists. The articles proposed to be edited were selected by Marta Álvarez, art historian, philosopher and cultural manager. 20 people participated, both on-line or at the museum, in the event, with almost 40 articles edited and 100 kb of information added. You can also help them improving the articles listed and selected.
Edit-a-thon about French St. James's Way in Aragon
Last 15 May 2015 there was an edit-a-thon about French St. James's Way in Aragon at Palacio de Congresos de Jaca. This event was organized by the Asociación de Amigos del Camino de Santiago de Jaca and Wikimedia España, with the support of Jaca City Council and the Museo Diocesano de Jaca. The purpose of this activity was to approach the French St. James's Way in Aragon to society and improve the articles related to it on Wikipedia. 15 people participated, both on-line or in person, in the event, with 20 articles edited and more than 60 kb of information added. You can also help them improving the articles listed and selected.
Grant for a GLAM project with National Museum of Sculpture
On May, Wikimedia Spain applied for a grant to start a GLAM project with the National Museum of Sculture of Spain, localted in Valladolid.
Talk and workshop at Recida Seminar
On 7 May 2015 there were a talk and a workshop about Wikipedia and Wiki Loves Earth at Recida Seminar (Centros de Documentación Ambiental y Espacios Naturales Protegidos) in Valsaín (Segovia).
Slow GLAM-month in Sweden
Ending a pilot
The collaboration between the Council of Central museums and Wikimedia Sweden is about to move into a new phase. At a meeting in May, recomendations for moving the project from a pilot phase into their ordinary work was developed and later accepted by the general directors of the group. During the fall, all involved GLAMs will work out in what way this should be incorporated into their everyday activities and make room in their budgets for working with Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. The recommendations (in swedish) included both appointing Wikipedia coordinators and have them start a network between the GLAMs as well as planning for internal and external edit-a-thons.
Offentligkonst.se
The database and website with public art, offentligkonst.se, has been updated with more municipalities and some new features. Improvment of the search engine makes it easier to find artists, and André Costa have started looking into how the databas can be used to improve Wikidata with better support for copies of art work in different parts of Sweden. In the ongoing law suit both us and BUS have presented our final arguments to the supreme court. The time frame is still open, but hopefully the supreme court will handle this case after the summer.

Royal Society of Chemistry
Andy Mabbett's residency at the Royal Society of Chemistry is ongoing. Although his activities were limited by the leave taken to allow for two overseas speaking engagements (see "Other news", below), he still had time to arrange and announce a 29 July editathon in London. As Andy is also Wikimedian in Residence at ORCID, he is also working with RSC colleagues to develop a plan for increasing the use of ORCID iDs within the organisation.

Thinktank
Andy Mabbett is also Wikimedian in Residence at Thinktank Museum in Birmingham. An editathon was held at the museum's stores, the Birmingham Museum Collection Centre. Images taken by attendees are mostly still to be uploaded, but for a list of the articles that were created or improved, see the event page. For more details, see the Thinktank project diary.
Oxford
At the Bodleian Libraries, Martin Poulter has secured:
- permission to upload web-resolution (max 1000px) scans of images from the Bodleian's digitised collections, with the option to request higher resolutions for specific files. Files will appear in commons:Category:Uploaded by the Bodleian Libraries' Wikimedian In Residence
- permission to access the rare books collection and take photographs of holdings including early bibles.
He is also building up a programme of events, including workshops for Oxford University staff and an Oxford At War editathon in November. These will be linked from the project page at Wikipedia:GLAM/Bodleian.
A workshop for library staff about Commons, Wikisource, Wikidata and Wikipedia was well-received (slides, links, and evaluation online). Staff of Oxford's museums have requested a similar workshop as a result. Some extracts of the workshops will appear online as short videos.
The Bodleian has been involved in large book-scanning projects, including with Google Books. Martin is exploring getting some of this content onto Wikisource.
Glasgow Museums
Sara Thomas's secondment to Glasgow Museums came to an end at the end of the month. Her final month report, and Summary and Reflections report, can be read at the project page.
The main achievements of the secondment were:
- Scottish Fairground Culture editathon
- This took place on 7 May, bringing together a volunteer community with whom Glasgow Museums have worked closely for a number of years, interested museum curators and members of the Wiki Working Group, and a gap on Wikipedia surrounding Scottish Fairground Culture. It is hoped that the event will be repeated in the future.
- Curator Training
- By the end of May, 22 Curators & other museum staff were trained in the basics of how to edit Wikipedia, representing around 50% of the curatorial staff. With this knowledge, these staff are then in a more informed position to support the project through the Wiki Working Group. A small number of those staff have shown a particular fondness for editing and have gone on to do more editing in their spare time.
- Advocacy around Open Knowledge
- By presenting at various internal staff events, as well as three conferences, the resident was able to raise awareness of the project and develop various links for further work, including kickstarting the process of gaining permissions for an eventual image release from Glasgow Museums' collection.
- Wiki Working Group
- This group is comprised of a number of interested curators and other museum staff, all of whom have undergone the Wiki editing training. Three meetings were held in total, with one member of staff identified as having responsibility for taking it forward, thus ensuring sustainability in the project beyond the . The group will identify gaps on Wiki relating to Glasgow Museums' collections, with the aim of getting the necessary permissions for an image release, as well as organizing wiki events, training of other staff, and facilitating staff contributions to Wikipedia.
The resident will return to Glasgow Museums on 8 June to present to a team of key internal staff about the achievements of the secondment, and the benefits of continuing the work internally.
National Library of Scotland
Ally Crockford's residency at NLS has now concluded. Ally worked tremendously hard during her residency, and the Scottish community will miss her greatly!

GLAMwiki's first 3D Flythrough!? A Roman Fort from Rotherham
Some great new media from Yorkshire's GLAMS! This progress has been accompanied by new stats from BAGLAMA2 showing that existing images are seeing great reuse (Summary in last report). There has been more training and more partnerships with Wikipedia editors too. Hopefully this will lead to a fresh surge in the last months of the project.

Wikipedian at the Centers for Disease Control - NIOSH
This month saw a blossoming of our collaboration with NIOSH, the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. I'm the Wikipedian-in-Residence there, and am working hard to bring NIOSH resources to Wikipedia and teach NIOSH researchers how to edit Wikipedia in compliance with our guidelines. This collaboration began in January and is still ongoing.

Wikidata for research proposal rejected
On January 14, a research proposal had been submitted to the European Commission, suggesting a project to integrate Wikidata with research workflows. On May 11, the rejection came in. A blog post by Europeana (who were a partner in the proposal) reflected on the outcomes of that funding call.
Arbitrary access
Arbitrary access is coming to more and more Wikimedia sites. In the context of the Open Access signalling project, this allows, for instance, to pull metadata about a scholarly publication from non-associated Wikidata items into wiki pages, as demonstrated here for licensing information.
Wikidata lists
As explained in this blog post, Magnus Manske has built a tool to automatically generate lists based on Wikidata queries. It is called Listeria (after the genus of bacteria) and can be invoked on a number of wikis, including Wikidata itself. Some example lists:

- A early preview of the primary SPARQL endpoint for Wikidata has been created to query Wikidata. Remember that it is not stable and still beta. A short introduction to SPARQL can be found in Lucie's slides.
