Going from animated films for children like Chicken Run and Finding Nemo to those queer contemporary artists and writers that have embraced failure as a style, Jack Halberstam is in the look out for models of kinships, alliances and communities that would provide an alternative to the neoliberal world and to the ideology of success that shape its subjectivities. This ideology unfolds through multiple injonctions to “success” in different aspects of social life: we must produce, accumulate and reproduce in order to satisfy the (re)productive obsessions of capital. In The Queer Art of Failure, Halberstam proposes a method of joyful deviance from sucess: “first, resist mastery”; “second, priviledge the naive and nonsensical (stupidity).
