Reality: Since it’s rare that you can find a single individual who can do it all, few DevOps unicorns exist. Developers want to code, not build CI/CD and deployment automation. These non-core functions are represented by dozens or hundreds of complex, competing solutions, making it very difficult to hire the right people.

Reality: DevOps is a function, not a role. As such, critical automation-oriented ‘ops’ work is often performed as an afterthought, rather than as part of a coherent, ‘left-shifted’ process where experienced SREs create and support an enterprise-wide ops automation discipline, and DevOps specialists consume these standards to automate application ops as apps are being built.

Reality: Even with public clouds, managing platforms and infrastructure are persistent burdens – hard to do and hard to staff. Cloud should be a commodity, but without a deliberate engineering effort to make it so, it isn’t.

Reality: Even organizations who are "all-in" on public clouds have learned that cloud operations do not go away – it is still complex and time consuming (on the same order as working with private clouds), and for most organizations, much more costly.
