We are pleased to announce that Microsoft Purview’s keyword highlighting feature (currently available for Sensitive Information Types) will soon be generally for built-in trainable classifiers.
Keyword highlighting allows you to quickly locate the text in your files that trigger positive matches to those trainable classifiers. By being able to rapidly identify the causes of these matches, you can more quickly decide whether further action is necessary. Furthermore, with the addition of keyword highlighting, you can be more confident that the built-in trainable classifiers are truly effective.
We’re also announcing the upcoming of a new trainable classifier that can identify business context in scanned files.
Reviewing highlighted results
Highlighted keywords are available when testing trainable classifiers and in the Microsoft Purview Content explorer.
Test mode
When you run a test against a built-in trainable classifier, the flyout pane provides contextual information about the matches found and highlights/summarizes the 10 most common keywords and phrases identified as a match, as shown below. It also displays the number of times each of those keywords/phrases appears (up to 10).

Keyword highlighting is only available for files that are scanned after the feature is enabled. To see highlighted results for files scanned prior to that date, rescan those earlier files.

Why is detecting business context important?
Detecting business context is paramount to safeguarding sensitive data and preventing oversharing. In a business environment, maintaining confidentiality and the integrity of critical information is a top priority. Without accurate context detection, there's an increased risk of data being leaked unintentionally.
For instance, when a colleague shares a document describing quarterly financial earnings and expense reports, our new classifier swiftly recognizes the business context, detects it is sensitive data, and helps you protect data more effectively.
Similarly, if your best friend sends a personal message about weekend plans, our classifier recognizes that the context of the message is not business-related. This enhanced precision eliminates clutter in the matches reported, helping you stay organized and efficient.
What are the benefits of identifying business context?
By minimizing non-business data clutter, administrators can efficiently manage data loss prevention (DLP) alerts, boosting productivity and strengthening data security. The end result is enhanced data security and a cleaner, more focused experience for both administrators and their teams.
How do I find the business context?
- Open the Microsoft Purview compliance portal and navigate to Data Classification> Content Explorer.
- If you know the name of the SIT you want context for, you can enter it in the Filter… box. Alternatively, you can expand the Trainable Classifiers section in the left pane and select Business Context from the list.
- Select a location under All Locations and drill down the folder structure to the item you want to check.
- Double-click to open the item in Content Explorer.
Adding the Business Context classifier to a DLP policy
You can add the Business Context classifier to a DLP policy by including it as a condition in a custom rule.
