- Computer systems offer many different authentication techniques that allow users to prove their identity. Let's take a look at three different authentication factors. Something you know, something you are and something you have. Now by far, the most common authentication factor is something you know. We've already talked about how passwords are the most commonly used authentication technique. And passwords are a something you know factor because the password is something that the user remembers and then enters into the system during the authentication process. Personal identification numbers are pins and the answers to security questions are also examples of something you know. The second authentication factor is something you are.
