- If you follow research on developmental psychology, you've probably heard that it's a bad idea to praise kids for being smart because if they fail at any point, then they think it must mean it was a mistake and they're actually stupid. So they don't take any risks and never venture outside their comfort zone. That's an area where it's a lot better to praise action, like studying hard, rather than declaring who they are as a person. But it turns out there's an interesting wrinkle because for issues of character, studies have shown it's just the opposite. Sure, it's nice when a kid is praised for doing a helpful action, but research has shown that what makes the biggest difference in their self-conception and their later actions is when you say look at how much you shared.
