Opening files in Photoshop

- [Instructor] When you first launch Photoshop, it displays a home screen to help guide you to the files that you want to work with. Now, don't be alarmed if you're new to Photoshop and your home screen doesn't look exactly like the one that you see here. Adobe often updates and customizes the content that appears in this screen. For now, I'm going to choose to hide suggestions, and then let's create a new file by clicking on the New File icon. Across the top of the New Document dialogue are a number of different categories, as well as recent documents and saved presets. If we click on a category, we can see the default document presets, and we can click to view additional presets. If we scroll further, we can see additional templates that we can use. Now, it might help if you resize this screen if you want to see more presets or templates at one time. Now we're going to use the options on the right to define the size of the document that we're going to open. I'm just going to change the width to 12 and the height to eight. We can change the units of measurement using the dropdown menu and also quickly swap the orientation. If we think we're going to open files using these settings often, we can click on the downward pointing arrow in order to save a preset. Here, I'll give it a name, 12 x 8, and save the preset, and we can see it's taken us to the Saved category, and here's our saved preset. Now, in order to open this, I can just double-click on it and Photoshop will automatically hide the home screen. All right, let's go ahead and close this, and when we close all of our documents, Photoshop will show us the home screen again. Now, if we want to open a document, I'll click Open and you might see an open dialogue box that asks you to open a document from the cloud, in which case, you can toggle to this open dialogue by just clicking the On Your Computer button. All right, then I will navigate to the desktop, which is where I've downloaded the exercise files, I'll go to 01 Opening Files, and then double-click to open the Iceberg.jpg file. Now, to access the home screen while a file is open, we can just click on the Home icon. To hide the home screen, we'll click on the Photoshop icon. You can also open new files or create a new document using the File menu if you prefer not to use the home screen. All right, let's close this document, and again, the home screen is automatically displayed, and now we can see our recently used files, which can be viewed either as this thumbnail view or in a list. Excellent. We'll cover these options more in depth in later chapters, but as you can see, there are several quick and easy ways to create new documents, save new document presets, and open files in Photoshop.
