Summary: It is my privilege to be in the work of connecting families and communities to the resources they need to break cycles and create their own healing. To work within a broken and historically marginalizing system to generate the kind of change that puts power back in the hands of communities and families and see them do their healing work. As an adult adoptee, I know firsthand how deeply vital it is for every child to have access to their own story and the capacity to connect in some way with their ancestry. My work with hundreds of others with lived experience has only reinforced this mission and belief. I was lead developer for the first federally approved tribal IV-E Prevention services plan (via #FFPSA )which incorporated culturally competent and accessible services to expand opportunities for families to avoid removal. I also collaborated with the Quality Improvement Center for Workforce Development to co-author the Family Safety onboarding curriculum, one of the first of its kind specifically geared toward equipping social workers to operate effectively in a tribal child welfare setting. During my tenure as project coordinator for the EBCI site of the Improving Child Welfare through Investing in Family grant, The Gadugi Project we worked to build upon cultural values and community strengths to improve support network access around vulnerable families and to increase the accessibility of needed education and resources for families to have what they need to thrive. This project seeks to #decolonize approaches to child welfare through expanding dependence on community and cultural supports and decreasing service based assistance. In 2021, I launched Verdant Path Consulting to expand opportunities to build high quality, community grounded, and strengths based systems for communities. At Verdant Path, culture is approached as the foundation of the house, not limited to the decorations. Most recently, I have entered a role with OpenDoors Asheville, designing grant proposals and guiding impact trajectories for this growing grassroots effort to address the race-based opportunity and achievement gap for youth enrolled in local schools through whole child and holistic family support.
