Leading semiconductor companies worldwide 2024, by market cap

Oct 1, 2024 | Semiconductors

As of October 1, 2024, Nvidia ranked as the leading semiconductor company in terms of market capitalization at 2.87 trillion U.S. dollars, followed by the likes of TSMC, Broadcom, ASML, and Samsung. This mix of companies reflects the broad and complex nature of the semiconductor industry, with firms featuring from across all parts of the chip ecosystem.

Regional highlights

The global semiconductor industry is dominated by companies from North America and the Asia-Pacific region. Countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan rank as some of the biggest markets for semiconductor equipment spending. One of the world’s leading chip-making machine manufacturers, and the only company in the world producing extreme ultraviolet lithography, or EUV, machines, is ASML based in Europe.

Europe’s semiconductor ambitions

The European Union (EU) has set a goal for Europe to produce at least 20 percent of the world’s semiconductors by value by 2030. Semiconductor revenue in Europe is lower than in other regions, although Europe does have key strengths which could help it to achieve the ambitious targets. An example is in the production of chips for the automotive industry, with firms such as NXP Semiconductors (Netherlands) and Infineon (Germany) specializing in this field.

Global conversion rates in selected verticals 2024

Oct 4, 2024 | B2C E-Commerce

Online conversion rates of e-commerce sites were the highest in the beauty and health sector, at almost three percent in the second quarter of 2024. Food and beverage followed, with a 2.4 percent conversion rate. For comparison, the average conversion rate of e-commerce sites across all selected sectors stood at just over 1.9 percent.

How does conversion vary by region and device?

The conversion rate, which indicates the proportion of visits to e-commerce websites that result in purchases, varies by country and region. For instance, since at least 2023, e-commerce sites have consistently recorded higher conversion rates among shoppers in Great Britain compared to those in the United States and other global regions. Furthermore, despite the increasing prevalence of mobile shopping worldwide, conversions remain more pronounced on larger screens such as tablets and desktops.

Online shopping cart abandonment on the rise

Recently, the rate at which consumers abandon their online shopping carts has been gradually rising to more than 70 percent in 2024, showing a higher difficulty for e-commerce sites to convert website traffic into purchases. By the end of that year, food and beverage was one of the product categories with the lowest online cart abandonment rate, confirming the sector’s relatively high conversion rate. In the United States, the primary reason why customers abandoned their shopping carts is that extra costs such as shipping, tax, and service fees were too high at checkout.

Power production breakdown in China 2023, by source

Oct 4, 2024 | Electricity

China sources most of its electricity from coal. In 2023, fossil fuels made up 61 percent of the total electricity in the country. Despite continuing to expand its coal power plant fleet, China has recently redirected its investment efforts towards clean energy initiatives with the aim of reducing pollution and emission levels.

From fossil to the future

As the largest global polluter, China has designated the development of renewable energy sources as a major objective of its economic policies. Already, the country produced the most renewable energy worldwide. However, as the second-largest economy, it was also the biggest energy consumer, attributed to its population numbers and a large manufacturing sector. (263455) According to the China Electricity Council, a national trade organization, the combined capacity of wind and solar power was going to exceed the projected coal power supply in 2024.

Long-distance relationship

One of the greatest obstacles to the green energy transition in the PRC is the distance between the green energy sources and its consumers. In general, the country has favorable conditions for the installation of wind and solar power, as the northwestern regions are not only abundant in wind and sun but also host China's hydroelectric dams. Nonetheless, most individuals and institutions lack awareness. However, most people and industry are in the country’s coastal provinces, many thousands of kilometers away. As a result, the country has built the world’s leading ultra-high-voltage electricity transmission system, which allows the transmission of energy over large distances. The longest transmission circuit in China exceeds two thousand kilometers.

Median age of the population in India 2100

Oct 2, 2024 | India

The median age in India was 27 years old in 2020, meaning half the population was older than that, half younger. This figure was lowest in 1970, at 18.1 years, and was projected to increase to 47.8 years old by 2100.

Aging in India

India has the second largest population in the world, after China. Because of the significant population growth of the past years, the age distribution remains skewed in favor of the younger age bracket. This tells a story of rapid population growth, but also of a lower life expectancy.

Economic effects of a young population

Many young people means that the Indian economy must support a large number of students, who demand education from the economy but cannot yet work. Educating the future workforce will be important, because the economy is growing as well and is one of the largest in the world. Failing to do this could lead to high youth unemployment and political consequences. However, a productive and young workforce could provide huge economic returns for India.

Brand value of the most valuable South Korean brands 2024

Oct 2, 2024 | International Trade

With a brand value of over 82.2 billion U.S. dollars, Samsung was the most valuable South Korean brand in 2024, greatly surpassing Hyundai, SK Hynix, as well as LG Electronics.
With its headquarters in the northwestern South Korean city of Suwon, Samsung is a world leader in the manufacturing of consumer electronics and semiconductors. Globally, Samsung produces more smartphones and mobile phones than any other brand, and has a strong presence in the tablet, television and computer components markets.

The evolution of Samsung

In its early days, Samsung was recognized for producing cheap consumer electronic alternatives. Customer perceptions have changed over the years, largely due to Samsung’s successful branding and advertising strategy adopted in the 90s. Today, innovation and creativity are both values which Samsung seeks to encapsulate through its products. Accordingly, Samsung smartphone owners are loyal, with a majority of global Samsung consumers opting for their next purchase to be a Samsung mobile rather than an Apple iPhone.

Samsung in numbers

Samsung has come a long way from its early establishment in South Korea to its current position as a globally recognized multinational conglomerate. It achieved a global revenue of close to 200 billion U.S. dollars in 2023.

The largest department in terms of employment at Samsung’s headquarters was the ‘Device Solutions’ division in 2023. This department is responsible for ensuring the ‘inner workings’ of Samsung’s electronic devices are optimized in terms of performance and reliability.

Most product development is not based in South Korea itself. In 2023, Samsung had registered  around 40 patents more in the United States compared to in South Korea during that year. Consequently, global research and development spending at Samsung Electronics reached an all time high in 2023 - a trend that looks likely to continue in coming years.
