Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Malay minum, from Proto-Malayic *inum, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *inum. The appearance of the consonant /m/ at the beginning of a word is probably caused by the influence of the Old Javanese infix -um-.

[edit]From Proto-Malayic *inum (compare Indonesian minum), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *inum (compare Cebuano inom, Hawaiian inu, Tagalog inom).
First attested in the Talang Tuo inscription, 684 AD, as Old Malay [script needed] (minuṃ) in the form [script needed] (niminuṃña) (current spelling diminumnya).
