From Japanese 温泉 (onsen), from Middle Chinese 溫泉 (ʔuən d͡ziuᴇn, hot springs), from (wēn, warm) + (quán, spring[s]). Compare the modern Mandarin pronunciation 溫泉温泉 (wēnquán).
