Wikipedia:Requests for history merge

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This page is used for listing requests for history merges or history splitting of pages. For relatively simple cases where history merge is required, the destination page should be tagged with the {{history merge}} template. This page should be used for requesting very complex merges, merges involving more than two pages, history merges of deleted pages, or when the use of the template is otherwise inadequate or where its usage would cause problems.

This page was originally for listing cut-and-paste moves which could not be repaired due to a then-extant technical limitation. The limitation has since been removed, but this page is still available if you find a cut-and-paste move, and are not able to repair it yourself (there is a procedure for doing it, but only administrators can do it, and it is a bit tricky!).

Administrators need to read Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Fixing cut-and-paste moves and Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions.

The procedure[edit]

  • If the issue is clear-cut (straight-forward cut-and-paste move(s) to a different title), place a {{history merge|NAME OF PAGE THE ARTICLE WAS CUT FROM}} template at the new location of the article which has been moved through cut and pasting, i.e. on the article where the pasting was done. This will place the request in Category:Candidates for history merging to be reviewed.
  • In more complex cases (explained at Wikipedia:How to fix cut-and-paste moves), please leave a description of the problem under the "Repair requests" section. An administrator will look over the pages and perform whatever tasks are necessary and update the request.
  • Tasks that have been completed or do not need further discussion will be removed.

Complex repair requests[edit]

Pages tagged with {{history merge}} are reviewed above. You do not need to file a second request here.

The Free Press (media company) lost history. My apologies for the less-than-routine request with the requisite template: I'm not exactly sure where the previous history is, but unless I'm mistaken, the page history of The Free Press (media company) (and its talk page history) currently only starts at August 2023. However, I myself moved the article to that name in February 2023 from an article originally called The Free Press (publication) (now deleted for who knows why), and made functional links to that page in February 2023. So what gives? There also seems to be some history at The Free Press before a redirect was restored. If this isn't the right place to find out, please tell me where before summarily rejecting my request on procedural grounds. --Animalparty! (talk) 03:16, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The article was deleted in February 2023 because it was created by a banned UPE spammer evading a block. I have undeleted the previous deleted history, interpreting Special:PermaLink/1172641058 as Chris Chittleborough taking full responsibility for the content as required for G5. I would suggest scrutinizing it closely both for notability and tone, though, now that the context is made clear.
On an irrelevant personal note, "The Free Press (media company)" (as well as "The Free Press (publication)" are both horrible choices of title - everything at Free Press could reasonably be called a media company. * Pppery * it has begun... 03:37, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WP:REFUND would technically have been a more proper venue, but you would have had no real way of knowing that. * Pppery * it has begun... 03:37, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
