Frequently asked questions
What do I get?
A Kirby license allows you to run a single installation on a single domain. Kirby is a self-hosted CMS. You have to bring your own hosting and domain on which you will run Kirby. The license is a one-time payment, there is no subscription, no yearly or monthly fees. See the license terms.
Can I try Kirby first?
Yes. It's important for us that you are confident with your choice before you purchase a license. There are two ways to try Kirby: Explore our online demo, created instantly for you. Or install Kirby locally or on a test server and take it for a ride. You may also work on your project locally as much as you like. Once your project is ready, buy a license and you're set for launch.
What does the revenue limit for Kirby Basic mean?
The Basic license at its discounted price is only available for projects of individuals, companies and organizations whose total yearly revenue or funding is below €1 million.
If your revenue or funding is above the limit, you need to purchase an Enterprise license at regular price. The Enterprise license does not have a revenue limit.
Revenue means all net sales or net turnover (not profit) you made through any means and not just limited to the website itself. Should you not have any sales (e.g. as a foundation, association or public authority), your ongoing funding/yearly budget is considered instead.
If you are building a website for a client (as a freelancer or agency), it is not about your own revenue, but about the revenue or funding of your client as the end-customer.
We only care about the revenue at the time of purchase. If your company becomes more successful within the next 3 years and crosses the limit, we are really happy for you. You don't need to get a different license though. We don't ask you to look into the future – we don't have a crystal ball either. Only when you purchase an upgrade at a later time, we will ask you to consider if your project then needs a different license.
Can I run additional websites with a single license?
No. A license is valid for a single Kirby installation, running on a single domain. If you plan to add additional installations (i.e. under additional subdomains or subfolders) you need to purchase licenses for each of those installations.
What about updates?
We include 3 years of free updates in your license. You get all new features and improvements from all major Kirby versions released during this time. All you need to do is to keep your Kirby installation up to date.
The 3 years start as soon as you launch your site and activate your license.
What happens when the 3 years of updates are over?
When you reach the end of your license's update period, you have two options:
- You can buy an upgrade of your license, adding additional years of feature updates. This will not happen automatically though. We leave it up to you to decide.
- Otherwise, you can keep using the latest Kirby version that was released during the 3 years and keep it running for as long as you like at no extra costs. Only when you'd want to use newer releases with new features and improvements, you'll need to upgrade your license and go with option 1.
You can also pause and upgrade to another round of updates any time later. Technically, this would probably count as a third option.
I already have a license for Kirby 1-3. Can I upgrade?
Yes! You can upgrade your license to Kirby 4+ and the new licensing model via our license hub.
All Kirby 3 licenses that had not been activated before Jan 1, 2023 can be upgraded for free.
For everyone else, we offer an attractive upgrade price, no matter if you have a license for Kirby 1, Kirby 2 or Kirby 3.
How can I pay for a license?
