The Souvenir: Part II

The Souvenir: Part II

The pleasure in these films is Hogg’s delicate, naturalistic stylization and framing of every scene, every conversation, every interaction between her repressed yet openly desperate characters. Part II brings more of what we saw in the original but adds an unexpected twist of magical-realist fantasy in the third act that blurs the lines between reality and filmmaking with startling grace. There’s also such a genuinely honest, lovingly rendered sadness over the whole thing that’s palpable and truly affecting; the whole movie is an act of mourning not just for Hogg and her characters, but one that pulls the audience in so that we’re feeling that loss just as keenly.
