Under the Presidency of the Russian Federation, the Security Council held two signature events: A high-level open debate on Maintenance of international peace and security (16 July), focused on multilateral cooperation in the interest of a more just, democratic and sustainable world order (S/2024/537). The Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation presided over the meeting. A debate on Cooperation between the United Nations and regional and subregional organizations in maintaining international peace and security (19 July), focused on the role of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (S/2024/538). The Secretaries-General of the three organizations briefed via VTC.

Under the Presidency of Malta, the Security Council held two signature events, both under thematic agenda items: • A briefing on Children and armed conflict (3 April), focused on addressing the consequences of the denial of humanitarian access for children (S/2024/265). • A high-level debate on Maintenance of international peace and security (17, 22 and 26 April), focused on the role of young persons in addressing security challenges in the Mediterranean (S/2024/288). The Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade of Malta presided over the meeting.

March 2024

Under the Presidency of Japan, the Security Council held two signature events: • A high-level open debate on Peacebuilding and sustaining peace (13 and 19 March), focused on promoting conflict prevention – empowering all actors including women and youth (S/2024/210). • A high-level briefing on Maintenance of international peace and security (18 March), focused on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. The meeting was presided by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan.

February 2024

Under the Presidency of Guyana, the Security Council held one signature event: • A high-level open debate on maintenance of international peace and security (13-14 February), focused on the impact of climate change and food insecurity (S/2024/146). The President of Guyana presided over the meeting and the Secretary-General provided a briefing.
