Giving recommendations to your co-workers and past colleagues is an important part of building your LinkedIn network. This topic tells you how to use a screen reader to give recommendations to your contacts. We have tested the topic with JAWS, Narrator, NVDA in Microsoft Edge, VoiceOver, the built-in iOS screen reader, and TalkBack, the built-in Android screen reader which adheres to common accessibility standards and techniques. Different screen readers and web browsers might behave differently.

To add recommendations with screen reader support:

To open the Me menu on the LinkedIn homepage, press the Tab key until you hear “Me button, collapsed,” and then press Enter.

To open your profile, press the Tab key until you hear “View Profile,” and then press Enter. Your profile page opens.

To start giving a recommendation, press the Tab key repeatedly until you hear “Recommendations overflow menu,” and then press Spacebar.

To give a recommendation, press the Tab key until you hear “Give recommendation,” and then press Enter. The Give a recommendation pop-up window opens.

Press the Tab key until you hear “Search for people,” and then start typing the name of the person you want to recommend. LinkedIn offers you suggestions matching what you typed. Use the Down and Up arrow keys to browse the suggestions, and then press Enter to select the person. Press the Tab key until you hear “Continue button,” and then press Enter.

To select your relationship with the contact, press the Tab key until you hear “Relationship,” and then press Enter. Use the Up and Down arrow keys to browse the options, and then press Enter to select.

To select the contact’s position at the time, press the Tab key until you hear “Position at the time,” and then press Enter. Use the Up and Down arrow keys to browse the options, and then press Enter to select.

To write the actual recommendation, press the Tab key until you hear “Add recommendation,” and then type the personalized recommendation text you want to use.

To send the recommendation, press the Tab key until you hear “Send button,” and then press Enter.
The focus returns to your profile page.
To add recommendations with screen reader support:

Open the LinkedIn mobile app. By default, the focus is on the Menu button in the upper-left corner of the screen, and you hear “Access my profile and other navigation links.” If you hear something else, swipe left until you hear “Menu button.”

To open the menu, double-tap the screen. You hear “Close menu button.”

To open your profile, swipe right once, and then double-tap the screen. You hear “Back button.”
