- According to a recent study, 54% of employees believe managers could handle disputes more effectively by addressing underlying tensions immediately when they surface. Robyn Short, "The Cost of Conflict in the Workplace," 2016. Wow. Most employees think that leadership avoids conflict. And I would agree. In my 40 years of work with leaders, I have met many more avoiders of conflict than those who deal with it right when it happens. But engaging with conflict right away is key to keeping it from developing into an even bigger problem. In this lesson, I'll help you recognize when you might be avoiding conflict and give you some helpful phrases you can use to turn a conflict into a conversation. First, consider an example.
