- When it comes to making sure you've understood someone in a conflict, there tends to be a lot more parrot phrasing than paraphrasing. Do you know the difference? Parrots repeat every word you say very methodically and without any emotion. They mimic you, literally word for word. That's the opposite of paraphrasing. It's also a terrible way to make sure someone feels genuinely heard and understood. After this lesson, you'll know how to use the skill of paraphrasing when you are listening to someone to make sure you understand what really matters to them.
