- Let's take a moment to look at the practical application of four of the most popular blend modes for compositing images together, Multiply, Screen, Overlay and Soft Light. I'm going to start with the background layer here but let's look at what else we have. We have an edge layer, we have an eclipse, some birds, a texture, and then a photo of a cloudy day. So, to start blending, I'll target the Edge layer. And if I want to keep these dark edges but hide the inside area here then I'll change the blend mode to Multiply. You'll notice that it's only hiding the values that were pure white though. Any of the values in the layer that actually have gray in them, they're going to be multiplied together. So, certainly I get the black edges but I also get kind of this neat, painterly texture. Now, what if I wanted the opposite? What if I wanted white edges?
