- [Narrator] The most important thing to know before you start working with filters is that if you simply select the filter from the filter menu, Photoshop is going to apply that filter and it's going to make a permanent change to your image. For example, if I choose filter and then we come down to stylize and then oil paint, and I apply that filter, Photoshop has made a permanent change to my image. At the moment, I can still use Command Z or Control Z to undo it but if I were to save and close this image it would be baked into the file. All right, I'll use Command Z to undo that. So to apply a filter in a non-destructive manner, we need to first convert it to a smart object. I can do that by using the Layer menu Smart Objects and convert to Smart Object. Or we can use the context sensitive menus in the Layers panel and choose to convert to Smart Object. Or under the filter menu we can use Convert for Smart Filters.…
